Community Litter Control Programs:

Annual Community Litter Clean-Up Fundraiser Opportunities for Mission Non-Profits

With the encouragement and financial support of The District of Mission and as a part of our on-going litter control campaign to educate and raise awareness to the litter problems in our city, Mission Adopt-A-Block invites all Mission non-profits to participate in our Annual Spring & Fall Clean-Up events.  Both events entail the participation of Mission non-profit groups in a community wide litter clean-up for the remuneration of $250 upon completion of assigned route.

Participating groups are responsible for the cleaning up of litter on public walkways, curbs, public green spaces, ditches, etc. on their assigned route, while Mission Adopt-A-Block supplies litter control equipment and oversees the removal of the collected “litter” garbage bags.  These community litter clean-up events are a great opportunity for Mission non-profit organizations to raise funds to support their program.  All Mission non-profits groups are welcome to apply to receive these funds.

Involvement in a community litter clean-up is an excellent opportunity to cultivate environmental social responsibility and to participate in a very rewarding community project that benefits all citizens and aspects of Mission.

Stream Litter Clean-Ups

Mission Adopt-A-Block began a stream clean-up initiative in the fall of 2010 to address rising concerns about the litter in the environment, in particular, sensitive aquatic habitats.  All litter eventually reaches our waterways by wind or water and this is where litter has the most detrimental impact on our environment.  Stream clean-up volunteer efforts raise awareness about the detriments of litter in the environment and help to reduce the amount litter that might otherwise cause distress to wildlife in the area.

Adopt-A-Block now includes stream clean-ups as a part of the society's annual fall clean-up.  Groups can choose between participating in a stream clean-up or a regular street side clean-up.  Thanks to a grant from Van City, Adopt-A-Block has purchased several pairs of hip waders to aid stream clean-up efforts.  These hip waders can now be borrowed from Adopt-A-Block to groups who organize stream clean-ups in Mission above and beyond the society's scheduled clean-ups.

General Community Litter Clean-Up Information

The Mission Adopt-A-Block Society is available to help coordinate a large group clean-up with your organization, school or community group. Group clean-ups can be scheduled for Saturdays throughout the calendar year, rain or shine. Group sizes should be a minimum of 10 individuals to a maximum of 25. Preferences for clean-up route & times can be arranged with the coordinator

*Due to safety reasons, no one under the age of ten can participate.

We provide the equipment to undergo the clean-up and help group coordinators select a route. We give the information needed to coordinators: how to undertake a successful clean-up, give an important litter safety talk to your group before commencing, and take care of the removal of “litter” garbage bags.

While clean-ups can be scheduled throughout the calendar year, please allow a month in planning time for your preferred guarantee date (as other community activities may fall on a Saturday). Time must be given to investigate litter route, recruit volunteers and obtain all the necessary information to conduct a successful clean-up.

Litter Control Program for Mission Businesses

As people live busier lives, work later and eat on the go more frequently, they also drop more litter. There has been an increase in all the types of litter on our streets, especially 'food on the go' or rather, 'fast food' items. Most people find fast food litter one of the most offensive types of litter and are becoming increasingly concerned about the environmental problem it causes, as well as its depreciating aesthetic consequence. As part of Mission Adopt-A-Block's commitment to a cleaner, safer and greener community, the society has developed a Voluntary Code of Practices for businesses that sell 'food on the go', that suggests what they can do to help reduce the amount of fast food related litter in the community.

The Code is a list of recommendations, involving the four areas of participation; public education, reducing packaging, proper waste handling & litter management; that businesses may pledge to perform, in partnership with the Mission Adopt-A-Block Society, the District of Mission, and other interested partners to reduce and prevent litter, and improve the local environment.

The Code recognizes that businesses themselves do not drop the litter, but that they must take responsibility by playing their part in improving the local area and therefore, the Voluntary Code of Practices is designed to help businesses work together with other concerned parties to create local solutions for local problems.

For more information about the Voluntary Code of Practices download the Guidelines & Information Package and see how your business can make a difference in a cleaner environment for the benefit of all.
